President's Corner, 9/1/20
I’m writing to you on Sunday after the first instructional week in my district, the KCCD. I know some of you have been back for the fall semester for a couple of weeks now. Some are just now getting started.
Whatever your semester schedule may be, I know one thing is true for all of us: we are working harder under more stressful and challenging circumstances than we could’ve imagined six months ago. I’m immensely proud, however, of the fellow faculty I come in regular (virtual) contact with at Bakersfield College and serving at colleges around the state. They are showing grit, creativity, and passion for our students and our discipline. The statewide colleagues I’ve been so impressed by are your MACCC Executive Board, who have been meeting every three weeks through the summer to plan for our first Virtual Conference November 20-21. I’m pleased to announce that, with the help of our long-time corporate friend and supporter Steinway, our conference will have back-stage production generously provided by the Conn-Selmer Division of Education. I will certainly miss being together in person with faculty at our annual conference, but I am very excited about the event we are planning. Even though it will be on a screen, I think you’ll find ideas, inspiration, and, of course, music at this conference. The conference program features opportunities to celebrate and advance the music discipline for both faculty and students. I hope you will join us and encourage your students to do so too.
I’m also very proud of our newly re-envisioned website www.macccmusic.org . This site is designed to serve as a resource for music faculty year-round with pages that allow members to share expertise and strategies and even engage in discussions with music faculty from all over California in our forums. I am deeply indebted to MACCC Vice President Peter Knapp of Long Beach City College for his many, many hours of dedication and skill to get this site up and running. Thank you, Peter!
